NQSF Project

This is a rundown of the process of kit bashing a SDS Models NZMF into a NQSF

When I started this project my first thought was to use 2x NZMF models to make up one NQSF. I then come to the realization that it was cost prohibitive. I then worked on the same modifications as the NSWR may of done with their own real life kit Bash. Back in the late 70's Container Traffic was becoming a big thing. The NSWR repurposed disused frames from Sheep Vans to build light weight Container wagons to quickly add Container capacity. These only had light frames with no real fish belly. As such they could take a Heavy 40 foot Container, or only 2x Light 20 foot Containers. They could take the small milk containers but not the large. They could not take heavy Bulk or Steel product containers.

First step was to work out where to cut. I used an Old Scaleways Model as reference

I then used some Brass Bar to lengthen the Chassis

Next I started with Styrene to add the frame detail

I was happy with the container support Structure, so I started to do more research

I found these images on the SDS website. These are just mobile phone grabs. This gave me an idea of the structure involved

After a rework

I finalized the brake detail before paint. I have just taken an uneducated guess on the layout

The end result is a model that easily fits in with the SDS NZMF

With small milk containers. I had not recoded at this point.

Anyway that is a brief look at the project. Another 5 more to do. I will redo the uncoupler bars at a later date as they are under coupler bars and not upper mounted as per the NZMF. SDS have these in the pipe line but I couldn't wait

Thanks Justin Moy
