A couple of bits

Hi Guy's

Just looking and it has been over 6 months since my last post on my Blog. I have had allot going on at the moment. When ever things are looking up, there has been something to bring me down. Earlier in the year I had myself a good case of the shingles. I wouldn't wish that on any body. Then more recently I had Whooping Cough. That was a bugger of a thing too. I have also had some issues with my eyesight which has affected me the most. Eyesight for me now is not a sure thing and this has basically put me in a deep depression which has been the hardiest  thing for me to deal with. With plenty of Family issues such as my Father in Law having a Stoke and now working full time, Modelling has just not been happening for me atm. This is much to the frustration of a few people that I have projects to finish off for, but I guess I am the most frustrated of all.

Anyway enough of that!

Modelling?

I had a pack of Auscision NLDF news print Vans show up today. They are real nice. I can't wait to weather them up. Just took some quick photos to show the detail up close. Auscision have been making leaps with their latest rolling stock. One new feature in their latest rollingstock is all metal shunters steps and brake wheels. Plastic parts such as these always broke off on previous models and this new detail is very welcome by this modeller.

Photo's tell the story, another fine model from Auscision. Also a little while ago Auscision released their WBAX Project. I will talk more about these at a later date as I tackle the weathering. These are a real challenge to weather realistically.

A few other projects have progressed a little, one is my NOBX project. I have been working on 4x AR Kits NOBX's, working on detailing them to a standard that will match todays RTR. It is a challenge that I have been documenting for my Blog. This will be coming some.
and this is a taste of what is to come

Lastly is some Milk Containers produced by a new cottage producer called Road and Rail Resin. These are not complete but will look real nice when done.
Sitting on a DAR models NQIX belonging to Greg Riddel

These are my NQSF and NQIX that will be put into milk traffic. Just got to weather and decal them and they will look real nice

Cheers for now

  1. Justin, so sorry to hear of your recent challenges, and hoping you continue to come good. It seems many of the fraternity are facing down these sort of things going by the various blogs. I've been following you and greatly admiring your weathering skills for some years but never communicated until now. We share an aspect of modeling not seen so much - I was born and raised in the Hastings, so the Nth Cst Rail is my layout and interest. Reason for my note - I also have some Road & Rail Resin kits of the milk tank/tainers (they being ubiquituos with Hastings Dairy Co-op at the Wauchope siding) and these are excellent kits. However I'm very interested to hear how you managed to drill the 1mm holes through the tank braces for the stiffening rods. I notice in your photo that you ended up with a bit of gouge out of the end bottom container frame as I suspected would happen, as the guide indent is below the frame height! Mission impossible! Love to hear how you did it.Thanks. Pete

    1. Hi pete, just in regards to the gouges out of the end bottom container frame. Yes it is hard to avoid this. My plan is the patch these up just before I start to paint them.

  2. G'day Justin,

I too am sorry to hear about the hard times. I hope things start on the way up.

As per usual your weathering is amazing. I love it how you are able to fade the look of the paint.

I was wondering where the NQIX (with milk tanks on top) came from? Looks very much like one of the scratch built wagons my uncle made? The reason why I ask is that I scratch built some NQAY 60 footers back in the 90s of which one of the guys from Beyond Bulliac bought at a Bowral exhibition. I would love to get these wagons back, that is if they are still in one piece.

    1. It was a challenge. It took about 4 containers to get the drilling right. In the end I was using a battery drill and holding the container down flat. I also used a larger drill bit for the first solid bit. Maybe 1.2 to 1.4mm bit. Once through I used a pin vice and made sure a drilled the inside braces in the right spot. This covered any directional errors. I used super glue to cover the larger holes

  3. Hey Towelly. I would say the NQIX would be your uncles. Mark Hollins? I am pretty sure Greg Riddel may have the NQAY's that you built. But pretty sure he would not what the part with them. I can ask anyway?

    1. Hi Justin,

Good to see one of the scratch built wagons around. Yeah Mark Hollins is my uncle.
It's also great to hear that Greg still has those NQAYS. I think I built and sold two there in Bowral.
I guess asking Greg wouldn't hurt but hearing that they are still around is great.

Thanks for the reply. Looking forward to more blog posts.

      Thanks,

      Linton

    2. Hi Linton, Greg has informed me that one of his friends - John has one of your NQAY's that you originally built. He would be interested in selling it back to you if you are interested. I can get more details if you would like? Cheers Justin

I know where you are at. My shingles attack left me with right eye issues which required cortisone based eye drops that gave me a cataract. the cataract has now been removed and I have a new lens. Just waiting on new glasses after 8 weeks or so for the lens to settle in. Not much fun having one good eye and one blurry one, no 3D vision when modelling up close, very strange.

Anyway, enough whinging, some nice work as usual from you.

    Regards,
    Ray P

  5. G'day Justin,
Glad your back mate, I was wondering when the next post mite be. My wife had an attack of shingles some time ago heard the name and never really knew what it was until she was diagnosed, put her down for months, I have a slight understanding what you have been through. Hardcore modeller myself and the only thing that pulls me up in the studio is illness, for years I drank myself to oblivion (try holding a xacto knife after a few beers) so no modelling was done over this period, lets see about 20years, and modelling is something I really enjoy so finally I smartened up for my family (no drink for 4years now, this was extremely difficult early on) and now as my wife states your modelling has come an obsession !! This is true,
so now most things good until I was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome (heard of that one ??) now, I get a real roll on in the studio, then I've got to go and rest or I fall down, Life !!! tends to throw ya curve balls, anyway as I said Great(about time Ha) to see a post buddy, love your modelling and camera work, always riveting and well worth a good look.....

    1. Hi Matt, it has been a challenge this last year. Ever since I started working in disability just over a year ago, I seem to be getting everything going around. It just maybe a coincident that this is happening. My eyesight issues worry me the most. What has really got to me this year is missing allot of events on my social calendar. That is a number of exhibitions like the Epping and Liverpool just because I have been sick or to busy with work to attend. The biggest one for me was being invited to present at the latest Branch Line Modellers convention at Coffs Harbour and having to say no as I just couldn't plan my life 6 months ahead at that point not knowing what was happening with my work or eyesight at that time. While the Convention was on, seeing all the updates on Social media, it was real depressing for me. This new year coming I hope to turn things around. Looking like an exhibition layout of Killawarra may happen. There is 3 of us, Greg Riddel, Dave Porter and myself that are in the process of planning the layout. Not sure if it will be a combined effort ATM, or whether I will be the sole owner with their help. One thing is for sure, the layout itself will be of a high standard. Only a max of 2 exhibitions will be attended per year.

    2. Hi Justin,
Hope you had a good Christmas and New Year and Santa got ya what ya wanted, you wouldn't believe what he brought me, First series X-class from Auscision, Beautiful model kudos to the boys its Gold.
I wait all year to take extended leave(school holidays)so that's six weeks of dad, my girls and model trains Ooh yeah !!! So this time of the year I can get a bit of a motor on, Bench work.12ft shelf, almost erected, only got a small studio atm 9x16 and with two huge bay windows to contend with(tricky)plan to go around the walls in future but really need a section of test track. Loksound. For the above mentioned Gem, tried TCS diesel decoder rather impressive but I am chasing VR prototypical sound, am investigating custom sound files done by user looks reasonably straight forward, huge learning curve but am looking forward to challenge ... Anyway that's my world currently thought I give you a shout out hope you are travelling well.
      Matt.

  6. Nice work, as always. The MSC container in the NOBF wagon dates from about 1998 based on the serial number, of course many won't know and the rest won't care.
